Bude Canal and Harbour Society

Registered Charity no. 1086646

2023 marked 200 years since the start of trade on the 35.5 mile Bude Canal and since 2001 the Society’s Charity Trustees have dedicated themselves to its’ conservation, rejuvenation and restoration so everyone has access now and for future generations.

The Bude Canal is actually owned by Cornwall Council as are the Sea Lock, historic Sand Railway and Breakwater. The Society’s Trustees aim to ensure the Council are aware of the Canal’s importance and historic value.
The BCHS works with the Town Council to open the Barge Workshop at Helebridge on Sunday afternoons in the summer months and also attend events such as Heritage Day. A quarterly newsletter booklet keeps people informed throughout the year as does the website with its wealth of downloadable maps, surveyor’s notes, panels, and hundreds of regeneration photographs.

Connect Bude

Campaigning to re-connect Bude and Holsworthy to the National Railway Network.

Here are our aims:
- To campaign to reconnect Bude and Holsworthy initially via Okehampton.
- To promote the new hourly rail service between Okehampton, Exeter and beyond.
- To ensure the trackbed of the former railway is protected against further development.
- To garner widespread community support of individuals, elected representatives and businesses in order to achieve the first three objectives.

Circular Mindset

We’re here to champion environmental resilience and circular economy practices across Bude and beyond. Our mission: to reduce single-use waste, lower carbon emissions, and strengthen a climate-resilient, community-led economy.

Be part of making Bude the first Cornish town to ditch single-use takeaway cups.

Friends of Bude Community Responders

The company’s activities will provide benefit to:

- Supporting our Local Communities by affording the best possible chances of survival and well-being, both physical and mental, for those in time-critical need, particularly in remote rural areas such as Bude and North Cornwall
- Supporting the development and expansion of the local provision made by the Bude Community First Responders by providing enhanced equipment and resources, over and above that provided by the NHS, to enable our local Community First Responders to develop and expand their operational capabilities and react appropriately at any time, day or night, year round.
- Recruiting and training more Volunteers as First Responders and more Volunteer Helpers within our local communities.
- Facilitating sources of help and support for the physical and mental health, and well-being, of our Communities, and, that of our Bude Community First Responders, as by the very nature of the work they do, often exposed to traumatic and disturbing events, cannot be underestimated.

We are looking for volunteers to assist us in supporting this vital service at a time when the NHS Trust is over-stretched and cannot fund some of the work our volunteer local Community First Responders urgently need

Friends of Bude Sea Pool

Bude Sea Pool is a semi-natural tidal pool and is a safe haven for wild swimming on the edges of the Atlantic Ocean. There is no cost, no booking nor any other imposed restriction. Bude Sea Pool is for everyone to enjoy for free.

Bude Sea Pool is preserved and enhanced, as well as kept safe and free by the charity, Friends of Bude Sea Pool (FoBSP). FoBSP is a company limited by guarantee (#07630060) and a registered charity trust (#1143156), at Bude EX23 8LE. The Charity aims ‘to preserve, improve and enhance the historic Sea Pool at Summerleaze Beach, Bude, Cornwall, as an amenity for the benefit of the community and visitors to the town.’

FoBSP receives no regular public funding and therefore relies on the generosity of those who visit it, use it and support it, including many local businesses and individuals who form part of the incredible Bude community

Pearl Exchange

The Pearl Exchange is an award-winning charity which offers 18 – 35 year olds a chance to connect, create and discover while accessing support for their mental health and future decisions. We do this by delivering a programme of free practical creative, cultural and wellness focussed sessions which teach new and transferable skills. These skills in turn help people to access new opportunities, develop new interests, build social connections and improve their overall mental health and well-being.
